Overview

Mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzees in Nyungwe and the Big Five in Akagera, in a small, hilly country with a mild climate.

Rwanda, the "land of a thousand hills", is compact, well connected and easy to get around. It is best known for the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park; Akagera in the east has savannah and the Big Five, and Nyungwe in the south-west has mountain rainforest, chimpanzees and a canopy walk. The country lies just two degrees south of the equator, but its height keeps the climate mild.

Recent history is never far away. The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi killed hundreds of thousands of people, and its memorials, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023. Kigali, the capital, is also the place for museums, galleries, markets and the best choice of restaurants.

Canada advises normal security precautions, the US rates Rwanda Level 3 (reconsider travel), and the UK advises against all but essential travel to the parts of Rusizi District within 10 km of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The safety section below has the details.

  • Volcanoes National Park: One hour with a mountain gorilla family, after a trek through bamboo-covered slopes.
  • Akagera National Park: Savannah with lion, black rhino, buffalo, elephant and leopard, and boat trips on Lake Ihema.
  • Nyungwe National Park: Mountain rainforest with chimpanzee tracking, a canopy walk and many birds.
  • Kigali Genocide Memorial: The country's main memorial, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with free entry.
  • Lake Kivu: Swimming, kayaking and boat trips from Karongi, a common place to rest after the gorillas.
  • King's Palace Museum: A reconstructed royal residence in Nyanza, with a herd of long-horned Inyambo cattle.

Altitude keeps Rwanda mild all year: in Kigali the average maximum stays between about 26 and 28 °C and the minimum between 15 and 16 °C in every month. What changes is the rain. There are two rainy seasons, from February to May and from September to December, with heavy downpours almost every day between sunny spells; April is the wettest month, with about 154 mm in Kigali. The west and north-west mountains get more rain than the eastern savannah.

June to August are the driest months, with only about 11 to 31 mm of rain a month in Kigali, and fall in the peak season for gorilla permits. Canada describes June to September as the long dry season, when water shortages can occur. Heavy storms in the rainy seasons can cause floods and landslides.

Getting around

Main airportsKGL
International driving permitRequired

In Kigali, motorbike taxis are the quickest way around: agree the fare first, pay by mobile money and wear the spare helmet the driver carries. The ride-hailing apps Move and Yego save you haggling. City buses take only the Tap&Go card, not cash. For longer trips, companies such as Volcano, Horizon and Virunga run buses from Nyabugogo bus station to every major town. The UK and Canada warn that shared minibuses and motos are prone to accidents: use licensed companies, confirm the fare and avoid public transport at night.

Driving: traffic drives on the right. Main roads are paved and in good condition, but secondary roads may be dirt and need a four-wheel drive, and rain can cause landslides. Speed limits are strictly enforced by cameras and police checks, typically 40 km/h in towns and 60 to 80 km/h on main roads, and roadblocks are common: always stop and show your documents. Avoid driving after dark outside the cities. The UK says you need a 1949 international driving permit as well as your licence. On the last Saturday of the month, during Umuganda, most services close and traffic is restricted in the morning.

Where to stay

  • International hotels: Several chains in Kigali, plus long-established hotels such as the Hôtel des Mille Collines.
  • Boutique guesthouses and mid-range hotels: Plentiful in Kigali's Kimihurura, Kacyiru and Remera neighbourhoods.
  • Budget guesthouses and hostels: Basic but clean rooms across Kigali; private rentals are common too.
  • Park lodges: Around Musanze, Huye and the Lake Kivu towns; lodges near Volcanoes National Park tend to be expensive.

Outside Kigali the choice is smaller. Accommodation in Rwanda is generally dearer than in neighbouring Uganda and Tanzania, so budget for it, especially near the gorillas. Along Lake Kivu there is something for every budget.

Eat and drink

Dishes to try

  • Brochettes: Skewers, usually goat, sold in bars and at roadside stalls, with chips or fried or grilled banana.
  • Ibitoke (matoke): Starchy cooking bananas, the nearest thing to a staple, boiled in sauce, grilled or fried.
  • Melange: The lunchtime buffet of potatoes, bananas, rice, cassava, beans and a little meat or fish. You fill your plate only once.
  • Zingalo: Goat intestine, sometimes served as a brochette. Say "oya zingalo" if you would rather not have it.

Drinks

  • Primus, Mützig, Turbo King and Amstel: The beers on offer in most bars, often in large bottles.
  • Urwagwa: Home-brewed banana beer, now also sold in bottles.
  • Ikivuguto: Thick, tangy fermented milk, served in milk bars along with fresh milk.
TippingNot expected but appreciated. Upscale restaurants sometimes add a 10% service charge; for motos and small services, people round up.

Kigali has by far the widest choice of restaurants in the country, from Indian and Chinese to Ethiopian, Italian and French. Elsewhere, expect brochettes and buffets. Rwandans rarely eat or drink in the street, so keep snacks for a café or restaurant.

Entry requirements and visas

Passport validityAt least 6 months beyond the date you leave Rwanda (Canada), with at least one blank page for stamps (UK)
PassportEntryMax stayNotes
United KingdomVisa on arrival30 daysFree 30-day visa on arrival for Commonwealth citizens; you can also apply through the Rwandan High Commission in London.
CanadaVisa on arrival30 daysA 30-day visa on arrival, or in advance on the Irembo platform.

Other nationalities: check the official source below.

UK and Canadian citizens get a 30-day visa on arrival, and Canadians can also apply in advance on the government's Irembo platform. The East African Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda with multiple entries for 90 days; if you get it before travelling, you must enter first through the country that issued it. You need a yellow fever certificate only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk.

Rwanda screens arrivals at Kigali airport because of the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, and Canada says strict restrictions apply to foreigners who have been in the DRC in the previous 21 days. Plastic bags are banned and will be confiscated on arrival, vapes and e-cigarettes are illegal, and you must declare a drone. Rules depend on your passport and can change: check with the Rwandan embassy or high commission before you book.

Money and payments

CurrencyRwandan Franc (RWF)
CardsCommon

The currency is the Rwandan franc (RWF, written FRw). Mobile money, mostly MTN MoMo and Airtel Money, is the usual way to pay, even for motos and small shops; you need a local SIM registered with your passport, then you top up with cash at any agent. Many hotels, restaurants and larger shops take Visa and Mastercard, and contactless payment is spreading in the cities.

ATMs are found throughout Kigali and in the major towns, though they can run out of cash at weekends. Carry some cash for remote areas: US dollar notes of USD 50 or more, printed in 2006 or later, get the best exchange rate, and the airport rate is slightly worse. Small coins below FRw 100 are rarely accepted, and prices are often rounded to the nearest FRw 100.

Health

Required vaccinesYellow fever, only if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk (from age 1, according to the CDC)
Recommended vaccinesRoutine vaccines, including measles (MMR), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, for most travellers, Rabies, for some travellers: rabid dogs are common, Cholera, to be considered for Western Province, Meningococcal, for travellers at higher risk
MalariaWidespread
Tap waterNot safe

The CDC lists malaria throughout Rwanda and recommends prescription medicine to prevent it; Wikivoyage notes that the risk is lower in Kigali, which lies at about 1,500 m, than around Akagera and Lake Kivu. Ask a travel health professional at least a month before you go (Canada suggests 6 weeks). Protect yourself from mosquitoes, which also carry dengue and chikungunya, and ask locally before swimming in lakes because of schistosomiasis. Do not drink tap water or ice; buy bottled water with an unbroken seal.

The Marburg outbreak of 2024 ended on 20 December 2024, but the UK advises gloves and a face mask if you enter caves with fruit bats. Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of the country. Medical care is limited outside Kigali, and serious cases may need evacuation to Kenya or South Africa, so get insurance that covers it. Bring enough prescription medicine in its original containers. In an emergency call 112.

This is general information, not medical advice: check with a travel health professional before you go.

Safety

Canada advises normal security precautions, but asks for a high degree of caution near the border with the DRC: in Rubavu District between roads NR11 and NR2 and the border, including Gisenyi, where it reports shelling; within 10 km of the border in Rusizi District; and along the DRC border in Volcanoes National Park, where markings are sometimes unclear. The UK advises against all but essential travel within 10 km of the DRC border in Rusizi District, including the Rwandan islands in Lake Kivu and Kamembe Airport. Borders with the DRC and Uganda can close at short notice, and the border with Burundi is closed. If you trek near the border, plan with your tour operator.

Crime is relatively low, but bag snatching, burglary and mugging happen in Kigali, and thefts from hotel rooms and cars occur. Take care walking at night, lock car doors, keep valuables out of sight and avoid travelling outside the cities after dark. Some military zones in Kigali are unlit and unsigned, and entering them can lead to arrest. Do not photograph military sites, government buildings, airports or border crossings.

National park trails are not always marked and the weather can change fast: buy a park permit, consider a reputable guide and stay on established trails. The UK also warns that building and fire safety standards are lower than in the UK, and that earthquakes can occur.

Customs and etiquette

Rwandans are private and reserved, and society is conservative. Dress modestly, avoid public displays of affection and keep your voice down: an angry outburst gets you nowhere, while quiet persistence does. It is impolite to look an elder in the eye, to ask someone about their ethnic origin, or to press people about politics. Most people prefer to be called simply Rwandan.

The week after 7 April, Genocide Memorial Day, is an official week of mourning. On the last Saturday of every month, Umuganda, the national day of community service, most services close until late morning. Same-sex relations are not illegal but are not widely accepted, drug penalties are severe, and plastic bags and e-cigarettes are banned.
