Overview

Tonga, the "Friendly Islands", is a Polynesian kingdom of 169 islands: whale watching and sailing in Vava'u, beaches and reefs in Ha'apai, rainforest on 'Eua. Tourism is small-scale and Sunday is a day of rest.

Tonga is an archipelago of 169 islands, 36 of them inhabited, in five groups. More than two thirds of its roughly 100,000 people live on Tongatapu, home of the relaxed capital Nukuʻalofa, with ancient tombs, coastal blowholes and beaches for snorkelling. To the north, Vava'u is a sheltered harbour for yachts and the place to see humpback whales from June to November; Ha'apai has quiet beaches and good diving; and 'Eua, the highest and oldest island, has cliffs and Tonga's largest rainforest.

Tonga is the only Pacific monarchy that kept its independence through the colonial age, and village life, Christian faith and respect for elders shape every day: almost everything stops on Sunday. Tourist services are basic outside Nukuʻalofa. The warm season runs from December to April and the cyclone season from November to April; May to November is cooler.

  • Whale watching in Vava'u: Humpback whales from June to November, on licensed boats.
  • Vava'u: More than 50 islands around a harbour that draws sailors from across the Pacific.
  • Ha'apai: About 60 low islands with sandy beaches, diving and snorkelling.
  • 'Eua: Cliffs, trekking and Tonga's largest tropical rainforest.
  • Tongatapu: Ancient tombs, blowholes and the capital, Nukuʻalofa.
  • A Tongan feast: Traditional food and dancing, organised by hotels and tour companies.

Getting around

Main airportsTBU, HPA

Between island groups you basically have to fly or sail; flights can be delayed or cancelled by bad weather. Ferries do not follow normal safety rules and are often overloaded, so consider carrying your own lifejacket. On Tongatapu you can rent cars, scooters and bikes, take taxis or join day tours; buses run without timetables. Traffic drives on the left and the speed limit is usually 40 km/h. The UK and Canada say your own licence is accepted, while Wikivoyage mentions a local licence as well: check with your rental company. Roads beyond Nukuʻalofa are narrow and potholed, and the alcohol limit is 0.03%. Avoid driving at night.

Where to stay

  • Hotels and resorts: From luxury to budget, including small resort islands north of Tongatapu.
  • Guest houses: Found in Nukuʻalofa, on 'Eua and in Ha'apai.

Most places have only a few rooms, so book ahead. Accommodation in the Niuas is limited.

Eat and drink

Dishes to try

  • Ota: Marinated raw fish.
  • Lu: Meat wrapped in taro leaves.
  • Lobster: Tonga has some good restaurants, and lobster is a speciality.

Drinks

  • Kava: The traditional, mildly psychoactive drink: try it at least once.
  • Ikale: The local beer, much cheaper in shops than in bars.

Much of the food is imported, apart from fish, root crops, fruit and vegetables, so prices are similar to or higher than in New Zealand and Australia. Drinking alcohol in public outside bars and restaurants is illegal, and you must be 21 to drink.

Most visitors get a free visa on arrival. You may need to show an onward or return ticket, enough money for your stay and confirmed accommodation; extend your stay at the Tonga Immigration Department and do not overstay. Declare all plant, animal and food products, personal valuables worth 500 pa'anga or more, and cash above 10,000 pa'anga. Rules depend on your passport and can change: check your government's advice or the Tonga Immigration Department before you book.

Money and payments

CurrencyTongan Paʻanga (TOP)
CardsLimited

The currency is the pa'anga or Tongan dollar (TOP, T$). ATMs are on Tongatapu, mainly in Nukuʻalofa, and exchange is limited on other islands, so bring cash for your trip around the islands. Most major hotels and some restaurants and shops take cards. Prices are similar to or slightly higher than in New Zealand or Australia.

Health

Recommended vaccinesRoutine vaccines, including measles (MMR), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Rabies, only for some travellers: ask a travel clinic
MalariaNone
Tap waterVaries

There is no malaria, but dengue (on Tongatapu, Vava'u and 'Eua), Zika and chikungunya occur: avoid mosquito bites. Tap water is generally safe, but quality varies by place. Wear footwear on beaches and reefs: the coral is sharp.

Health facilities are basic and medicines are limited; most non-basic problems need evacuation, so get insurance that covers it. For an ambulance, call 933.

This is general information, not medical advice: check with a travel health professional before you go.

Safety

Serious crime is low, but petty theft is fairly common: lock your room, use hotel safes and stay in lit, busy areas after dark. Foreign women have been targeted by sexual assaults, including on beaches, so avoid walking alone at night and avoid unattended beaches. Lagoon currents can be powerful and waves break on reefs: take local advice before swimming or surfing, and watch for debris left by the 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption. Tonga lies on the Ring of Fire, and earthquakes and undersea eruptions can trigger tsunamis. Cyclones are most likely from November to April.

Customs and etiquette

Tongan society is conservative and religious. On Sunday people rest, and recreational activity outside island resorts can be seen as disrespectful. Dress modestly away from the beach: topless sunbathing and public nudity are illegal and can bring a fine. Show respect to elders and people in authority, avoid boasting and gossip, and never criticise the royal family. Same-sex sexual activity between men is illegal. If you ask a question and the answer is "yes", check with a follow-up question: some people say yes when they are unsure.
